SAPPO adopts GS1 traceability standard
Globally, traceability is the cornerstone of all consumer assurance programmes and is also an important component of the local pork industry’s ability to export pork derived from compartments. SAPPO has identified GS1, a well-known international standard as its traceability method.

Phase 1 of SAPPO’s Business Intelligence project has been completed. Click below to visit the site. Phase 1 gives an industry overview, trade data, slaughter figures and retail prices. Isabel Bröcker, who heads SAPPO’s Business Intelligence Division, says that the idea is to expand the site in future to also include data about raw materials, a feed calculator and eventually also a dashboard for producers to benchmark themselves against international producers. SAMPA gives a million Rand to food safety
The South African Meat Processors Association (SAMPA) has donated R1 million towards the activities of Stellenbosch University’s Centre for Food Safety.
