What impressed me about the unrest in KwaZulu-Natal is how South African pig farmers tackle a crisis, head-on but with a positive attitude. The unrest in the province of course severely impacted on pig farmers’ business. The disruption at the Frey’s abattoir severely affected farmers’ slaughter capacity and the closure of roads meant that no supplies could reach them. But it was heartening to experience how they stood together and helped each other, especially with regard to slaughter capacity. It seems that everyone is finding their feet again.
