The latest meat imports

Bovine meat imports for May 2021 amounts to 1 387 tons. This represents an increase of 71% if compared to May 2020, according to Agri Inspec.

The FOB (Free on Board) price for May 2021 was R42.91 p/kg and for May 2020 it was R41.45 p/kg. This represents a 3.5% increase in price per kg.
   
The major imports originated from Australia (242 tons). 

Live weaner imports for May 2021 amounts to 26 983 units. This represents an increase of 265% if compared to May 2020. The price was R7 512.80 per unit, which is 40% higher than May 2020.
  
Sheep meat imports for May 2021 amounts to 225 tons. This represents a decrease of 35% if compared to May 2020. The FOB price was R24.15, which is 32% lower than the May 2020 price.
 
The major imports originated from Australia (205 tons).
 
Live sheep imports for May 2021 amounts to 42 783 units. This represents an increase of 20% if compared to May 2020. The price was R1 289.93 per unit which is 46% higher than May 2020.
  
Namibia was the major exporter to South Africa with 42 740 units.
