The Honourable Minister for Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Mr Senzeni Zokwana addressed a media briefing on the Foot and Mouth disease status of South Africa held on Tuesday, 13 January 2015 in Pretoria.
The Minister gave background on the current status of key Foot and Mouth disease control measures in the country to safeguard the South African FMD free zone status and he highlighted eight areas that required immediate attention.
Every country’s FMD free zone status is reviewed annually at the OIE Scientific Commission meeting held in February and the Minister appealed to all stakeholders, including government departments and the farming community at large to participate and collaborate to ensure that control measures were effectively implemented.
